MTCCCA 2006 Hall of Fame Biography

Bill Cunningham
Boy’s T&F Coach at Louisiana HS for 30 years before retiring in 1984, plus four years previous to that at Cabool.  His teams brought had four top 4 finishes at state, including three second-place trophies and he coached nine state champions among 85 All-State athletes.  His teams won eight district and eight conference championships. Charter member of MTCCCA.

Dave Denny
T&F and CC Coach for 30 years with 2 at Tuscumbia, 11 at Belton, 2 at UMKC, 13 at Lee’s Summit and the last two at Lee Summit West.  His teams have won 22 conference, 16 district titles and three state titles, one each in boy’s CC, girl’s CC, and boys T&F.  Dave has coached three athletes, Amy Wiseman, Joe Falcon, and Matt Tegenkamp that have qualified for the World CC championships.  Joe and Matt are two of only five native Missourians to have broken the 4 minute mile.

Dean Hays
Hardin-Central T&F Coach since 1980 and CC Coach since 1986.  In T&F, 31 conference championships, indoor and out, 23 district plaque teams and five state trophies including a state champion boy’s team in 1980.  His track athletes have 273 All-State certificates between them.  Also coached a girl’s CC team to 3rd at state in 94.  A past president and a current officer for the MTCCCA.  Four time MTCCCA COY and a former nominee for NHSACA COY.

Frank Lemons
Boy’s T&F Coach since 1976 and the CC Coach from 1981 to 1990 at Hannibal.  Frank has coached six state trophy teams, three each in T&F and CC, 18 state champions and almost 150 All-State athletes.  Frank has been the state track meet manager since 1995 and a member of the of the T&F advisory committee since 1982.   Has coached four athletes that have earned NCAA All-American honors and three that qualified for the Olympic trials – Rick Cummins, Michael Cox and Keenan King.

Mark Kimball
Coaching career has lasted 31 years including 2 years at Fulton High School and 29 years at Eureka High School.  State champ at Riverview Gardens in the 2 Mile and in CC.  Was on the last MU team to win the Big 8 CC Championship.  During his years at Eureka Mark has coached 15 top 4 trophy finishes at the state level including 2 state championships, one each in T&F and CC with 73 all-State performances by athletes in CC and track and 19 individual and relay State Champions.

David Lee
University City HS graduate.  1980 Olympian in the 400 Hurdles.  An NCAA and national champion in that event while at SIU-Carbondale and was several times nationally and world ranked.  Best of 48.42 in the 400 hurdles, plus 25-2 in the long jump, 50-8 in the triple jump and 13.8 in the high hurdles. David is currently in his sixth season of coaching hurdles at University City High School.

Martin Margalski
Girl’s T&F Coach at Lafayette since 1988.  His teams have won 15 Suburban West Conference meets, 15 district meets, finished 17 times in the top 16 at state including five state trophies with a state championship in 1990.  His athletes have produced 189 All-State medals and eight state champion performances.  Ski is a former MTCCCA COY and a finalist for NHSACA COY.  A past president of the MTCCCA.

Jason Pyrah
1996 and 2000 Olympian in the 1500 meters.  While at Willard HS, where he graduated in 87, he was a six time state champion and still has the 8th fastest 3200, 3rd fastest 800, and is the state meet record holder at 1600 meters.  Six times nationally ranked in the mile by Track & Field News and has a PR of 3:55.14 in that event and 1:46.62 in the 800.  Now a certified athletic trainer in the Springfield area.

Charley Welker
Boy’s T&F coach from Monroe City from 1967-1978.  156-21 record in dual, tri and invitationals during that time period with 11 conference and 8 district champion teams.  Two state champion teams plus four other top 4 finishes.  Three time MTCCCA COY.  From Jackson HS and attended SEMO.  Two-time state meet starter and four-time head field event referee.  Charter member of MTCCCA.
