2003 Hall of Fame Biography

Ray Davis
A former MTCCCA president.  Ray was a longtime teacher at Parkway West where he coached Track for 23 years and Cross Country for 21.  He had two back-to-back state champ teams in girl’s Cross Country in 1989 and 1990, two other top 4 finishes, plus nine conference titles.  Ray was instrumental in starting and developing women’s high school cross country in Missouri.  His Track coaching accomplishments include four individual state champions and a top 4 team finish.

Dennis Licklider
A former MTCCCA president and current Jefferson City HS Track coach where he has taught since 1975. Dennis has had four state champion teams among 20 state meet top 4 finishes.  In addition he as had 28 District team titles, 36 individual champions and MTCCCA Coach of the Year six times. Dennis is still very active in the MTCCCA especially with the state track meet.   Dennis is an Owensville native and also coached at Perryville and at U High in Warrensburg.

Lynn Mitchell
One of the most successful high school coaches in Missouri all time with five state champion girls’ teams, four at Sumner (76-78-79-80) and one at Normandy (86).  She also had two other top 4 finishes.  Lynn was one of the pioneer women coaches in the beginning days of high school girl’s track in Missouri.

Herschel Neil
Five individual Missouri high school state championships in 1933 while at Grandview HS in Worth Co. in 1933.  Herschel was the NCAA record holder in the TJ had 17 individual MIAA conference titles, and eight school records while attending what is now Northwest Missouri State.   He was also an NCAA All-American in 1936 & 1937 and two time AAU national champion.  An inductee into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, he is also honored by having the track at Northwest Missouri State named after him and the gymnasium at Blue Springs High School.

Larry Young
Olympic bronze medalists in the 50km race walk at Mexico City in 1968 and at Munich in 1972.  Larry won 30 national titles and represented the US on eight different national teams.  A native of the Independence area and a graduate of Fort Osage High School, where he was the school record holder in the 880 and the mile, Larry also attended a one room school near Orrick and junior high at Richmond.  Larry studied at Columbia College and is now one of the foremost bronze sculptors in America.  He is one of the few Missourians that is also a member of the USA Track and Field Association Hall of Fame.
